Cold Weather RV Camping Tips
Some people only prefer to go on an RV camping trip during the summer when the weather is mild and reasonably nice. Others choose to use their RVs through the winter months to enjoy cool temperatures and the unique experience of winter RV camping. Camping during winter presents some unique challenges that you will want to address to avoid being too cold in your RV or having some important element break down when you’re nowhere near a repair shop.
Add Insulation
One important step you’ll have to take when using your camper during winter is adding insulation. RV walls can be somewhat thin, so you may need to insulate them to keep the heat in and the cold out. Heavy drapes can also help to block out cold around windows.
Adding foam board insulation around your water heater can help it to be more efficient and retain the heat it generates. Using an RV skirt can help keep cold air out from under your motorhome; just ensure you’re not blocking any exhaust pipes with it and keep your tailpipe clear of snow. Using bubble foil can be a great way to add insulation around windows, a primary place for heat to escape.
Use Heaters
You might need to invest in other heat sources to keep your RV warm. Space heaters are a good investment that can be moved from your living room to your bedroom to keep you warm. You could also install a special heating system, such as propane heaters and pellet stoves.
Protect Your Plumbing
One frequent concern among winter RV travelers is how to keep their pipes from freezing. Heat strips can be an excellent way to prevent the water in your hoses from freezing. Some parts of your piping system might already be insulated by virtue of being behind access panels or cabinets, so you won’t have to worry about these. If your waste valve is at risk, you may want to insulate it while ensuring that it stays closed when not in use. If your fresh water tank is in a warm area, use it as your primary water source.
